Boost your technology skills to build more confidence in the classroom! SD Mesa College offers tutoring programs and learning tools to help you succeed in both your general education requirements and in the Geographic Information Systems program.
Your first days in class may go more smoothly with a small amount of preparation. The CalWomenTech Learning Library has software to help you build your skills in spatial reasoning (the ability to see things in three dimensions) which is critical to GIS and map reading. Browse the CalWomenTech Learning Library to see what might be of interest to you and then use the software free of charge at the Tutoring Appointment Center.
The SD Mesa College Tutoring Appointment Center also provides free peer tutoring in GIS and other courses from trained student tutors, mostly by appointment (with some drop-in appointments available). Students may receive one hour of free tutoring per subject per week.
The Tutoring Appointment Center has close ties with the Geographic Information Systems program. In fact, the center supervisor, Erica Specht, was in one of the first student groups to go through the GIS program and is GIS-certified. She is a strong advocate for women in the program. The center provides access to a special tutorial software program used by GIS students to help them with coursework and map production (using the industry standard GIS software package from ESRI). Erica has also offered to mentor women students in the program!
You can find additional tutoring options for math and science, writing, and almost any other subject taught at SD Mesa. Visit the Tutoring Centers page for details.
